Seeing the unity of life is perhaps the most fundamental spiritual realization. Many religious traditions teach that all life is interconnected, and many spiritual teachers go even further, asserting that all life is One, that the entire manifest universe is the body of the Divine suffused with the divine Soul.
This is the secret of life. It sounds simple, and it is, but although it may be easy for us to acknowledge this truth, it’s so much harder to experience it and live it. One way to incorporate this secret into our lives is by being compassionate toward others, bringing peace into the world, and relieving suffering in others. Through these actions, we affirm this truth and incorporate it into our very being. The more we treat everyone “like God in drag,” the more we experience them (and life) in that light. We will begin to see the Divine in everyone, even when they don’t see it, and as our perception changes, our world changes. Again, to quote Ram Dass:
“When we see the Beloved in each person, it’s like walking through a garden, watching flowers bloom all around us.”
