There is a Zen proverb about a student who asked his teacher, “What is this thing I’ve heard of called ‘The Moon?’” The teacher pointed up into the sky, but the student did not look up; he mistook the finger for the Moon. Religion in the world today is mostly like that: people mistaking the finger for the Moon.
