Five of Cups — Spiritual Message of the Day

March 1, 2011

“Where there is sorrow, there is holy ground.” — Oscar Wilde

Today’s card, the Five of Cups, reminds me that we all have our personal histories of sadness, grief about things in our past that we keep locked deep in our hearts. It’s important to realize, though, that when such sorrows are locked away and hidden from the light, they aren’t locked out; they are locked in. In fact, one might say that we are locked in by them.  It is only when we are able to “unlock” them and expose them to the light of day that we can finally release and be free of them. Emptying our hearts of residual grief is part of a purification process so that light can come into our lives.

For most of the sorrows we keep inside, we don’t need someone to solve or fix anything. It’s usually just enough to have a silent witness. And when we allow this process to bring us to a place of closure, we learn to let go and move on.

Is there someone in your life that you can talk to about your sorrow about something? Someone who will just listen to you without judging, who will just acknowledge your pain so that it can then dissipate? That’s often all you need.  And remember, everyone has their own sorrows, so sometimes that’s what they may need from you.

The following is an affirmation from my book Tarot Affirmations that you may want to use:

I am letting go of regret, blame, and disappointment in order to find healing in my life.

  1. Grief. No two humans are alike in how we process it, Yet it is the one thing, perhaps the only thing we all have in common.

I have the piece from a Nov 7 post re: May their souls know…written on a pink post-it next to my computer mouse. It was such a comfort to read as my father-in-law and I traveled through many months of home hospice care to the dark door where I couldn’t follow…yet.

I have been sending some of your spiritual messages along to my psychotherapy clients. You say true and profound things beautifully in ways that are very simple and easy to understand.

    Thanks,
