Seven-Card “Emperor Spread”

May 7, 2011

My coloring of the RWS Emperor cardAt today’s meeting of my Tarot Exploration Group, we created a spread based on the image of the Emperor from the Rider Waite Smith deck. This is a rather general spread that is useful for wide variety of readings.

The process we used is described in my book, Tarot: Get the Whole Story, but the following is a brief overview:

First, identify a few of the essential symbolic elements of the card image. Consider what these symbols might represent and create positional meanings based on that consideration. Then arrange those positions in a pattern, which is the layout for the spread.

The resulting spread is as follows:

Emperor Spread

1. What you are looking back at? (The left ram’s head on the Emperor’s throne)

2. What you are looking forward to? (The right ram’s head on the Emperor’s throne)

3. What is the Universe telling you? (The crown)

4. What are you bringing to life? (The ankh scepter that the Emperor is holding)

5. What is going on in the world around you? (The golden globe that the Emperor is holding)

6. What is protecting you? (His armor)

7. What is supporting you? (The throne)

The reading that we then did for one of my students using this spread was for the question “What’s going on in my life right now?”

I would like to thank Gloria, Lisa, and Dorie for their participation in this process.
