The High Priestess — Spiritual Message of the Day

May 29, 2011

High Priestess -- Tarot of the MastersIn numerology, the number two represents (among other things) duality and polarity, which consequently associates these meanings with the Major Arcana card numbered II: the High Priestess. However, the High Priestess is typically seated between the pillars of polarity, so this card can represent a balance or middle ground between opposites. It also indicates the concept of unity within duality as represented by the Yin Yang symbol. Yin YangIn other words, polar opposites are interconnected and only exist in relation to each other. A couple of simple examples of this include the fact that “hot” only exists in relationship to “cold” and the fact that defining the inside of a circle also defines the area outside of it. This concept of the interconnectedness of polar opposites can lead to a deeper understanding of life and the world around us.

As an exercise, think of two opposing forces or factions in an area of your life where you feel stressed by the resulting polarization. This may be in any area—family, religion, politics, etc.—and its scope may range from being personal to global. For example, you may be experiencing tension because you and your spouse have widely divergent ideas about how to raise your children, or you may feel that your vision of a peaceful world is challenged and threatened by political factions that support war.

Now consider these polar extremes and try to discover their inherent unity. What do they have in common and how do they depend upon one another? For example, how are the anti-war movement and the country’s war efforts related? Or how might you and your spouse find common ground in your child-rearing efforts? It’s also important to realize that in such polarizing conflicts, railing against the opposition in some ways strengthens it and creates more of it. Try to see how that might be the case in your example.

This exercise will probably be uncomfortable at first since our egos want to separate our position and that of our “enemies” to create a false dichotomy of “good versus evil.” However, doing this will bring you to a place where you can begin to see how everything is interrelated. You will begin to see the oneness in everything and thus begin to dispel your own illusions of duality. And ultimately, you may begin to dispel the ultimate dualities of our separation from each other and from the Divine.
