The Hermit — Spiritual Message of the Day
In a prior post about the Hermit card I talked about how “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” There is another side to this student/teacher equation though. Merely being a sage is not enough to be considered a guru; one must also have students to teach. In that case there is a less well-known saying that is fitting: “When the teacher is ready, the students will appear.” To see how this might happen, consider the following quote from William Butler Yeats:
“We can make our minds so like clear water that beings gather around us that they might see their own images, and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even fiercer life because of our quiet.”
This quote illuminates the point that we teach by our “being” more than by what we say, and it’s not just a matter of providing a good example. There truly is something magical about the energy or aura of an enlightened person.
But what does this have to do with us common mortals? The idea of “When the teacher is ready, the students will appear” is relevant to all of us, even those of us who are not yet spiritual sages (which of course means most of us), because we learn a lot in the process of teaching others, no matter what level of teaching that may be. It is also important because helping others find their way is part of our own spiritual practice. These considerations are illustrated by the following wonderful quotes:
“If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path.” — Buddhist Saying
“I’m not a teacher: only a fellow traveler of whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead — ahead of myself as well as you.” — George Bernard Shaw
“We are all on the journey towards enlightenment and at each stage must share what has been discovered with those who will listen. The sharing is part of the work. The listening is part of the work. We are all on the path.” — Ram Dass, Be Here Now
