Another look at the spiritual message of the King of Cups

December 20, 2011

King of Cups -- RWS2.0In the RWS version of this card we see a king sitting placidly on a throne in the midst of a stormy sea. A message we may infer from this is that we are like the ocean. Although our lives may be agitated by the vagaries of life, deep down we have a peaceful core, which, like the depths of the ocean, remains calm even when its surface is agitated by a passing tempest. External conditions can stir up that which is superficial in our lives, but they cannot disturb the deep, true essence of our soul.

Unfortunately, we think that our true identity is defined by surface agitations caused by external events. We identify with the volatile surface and fail to realize that our essence goes much deeper, all the way down to a calm, silent, impenetrable depth. But if we can believe in our true Self, which lies in the steady, peaceful depths of our being, we will discover a profound, abiding serenity that provides safe haven in times of trouble and doubt.
