Five of Pentacles — Spiritual Message of the Day

December 15, 2012

Five of Coins / Pentacles -- Tarot of the Masters

“Grant that I may be given appropriate difficulties and sufferings on this journey so that my heart may be truly awakened and my practice of liberation and universal compassion may be truly fulfilled.” — Tibetan prayer

The Five cards in the Minor Arcana reflect the Hierophant (numbered V) in its aspect of a teacher, and the Five of Pentacles urges us to learn from our misfortunes because adversity is not here merely to cause us suffering. It is here to help us learn lessons of appreciation, forgiveness, and non-attachment. In fact, misfortune may be a blessing in disguise because our hardships can make us more conscious of our need for spirituality.

When things are going well, we don’t usually bother to wonder about the eternal, unchanging world of Spirit. When we are cast down into misfortune, however, we are much more open to considering it. As Marianne Williamson says, “A certain amount of desperation is usually necessary before we’re ready for God.” So when we hit rock bottom, we are in a place where we are willing to look “up” toward the Divine, and that new perception is a “blessing” hidden in misfortune. For example, in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl tells a story about a young woman he encountered in the concentration camp who was dying. He was surprised to find her in good cheer despite her impending death, which she explained in this way: “I am grateful that fate has hit me so hard. In my former life I was spoiled and did not take spiritual accomplishments seriously.”

If you enjoy these words of spiritual advice from the cards, you will love my new Tarot book called The Soul’s Journey: Finding Spiritual Messages in the Tarot.
