Pithy Tarot meanings — Four of Pentacles

January 5, 2013

Four of Coins / Pentacles -- Tarot of the MastersFour of Pentacles:
“The love of money is the root of all evil.” — 1 Timothy 6:10

Note that the common saying is “Money is the root of all evil.” The difference between these two versions is an important distinction. The original quote is not really an admonition against wealth, per se, but an admonition against the obsessive pursuit of it and fixation on it. So perhaps another pithy meaning for this card is this:
Do you possess your wealth or does it possess you?

For a more extensive examination of this topic, see my blog post about this card from almost two years ago.

PS: Note that we might also use this quote as a pithy meaning for the Devil card.
