Eight of Swords — Spiritual Message of the Day

January 9, 2013

Eight of Swords -- Tarot of the MastersI was reminded of the Eight of Swords while reading today’s entry in The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo. In this entry, Nepo relates a tale about a friend who filled up his bathtub to give his fish a place to swim while he cleaned out their small tank. After cleaning the tank, he returned to the bathtub to find that the fish were swimming around in an area the size of their tank even though they had much more room available in the bathtub. It was their conditioning, not their reality, that restricted the range of their movement.

Similarly, we limit our lives to the confines of we think is real and what we think is possible. Like those fish, it is our conditioning rather than our reality that restricts us. Moreover, consider that our five senses are very limited in what they can perceive, and then add in the fact that every sensory input is mentally filtered and censored by our past conditioning. In fact, A Course in Miracles even goes so far as to say, “No one really sees anything. [We] see only [our] thoughts projected outward.”

Thus, we should train our minds to be open to the realization that there is more to life than what we can perceive and what we’ve been led to believe. With that dawning awareness we can begin to swim freely through the vastness of life instead of limiting ourselves to the confines of our imaginary fish tank.
