The Chariot — Spiritual Message of the Day

In a previous blog post, we saw how the Tragedy and Comedy masks on the Chariot card can indicate our Jekyll and Hyde dichotomy. However, they have another symbolic meaning that we can also examine, which is that we all wear various masks in our lives—i.e., we play different roles—that we often struggle to reconcile and behind which our authentic selves are hidden.

For example, the dictates of a career may be in conflict with the requirements of being a parent or a spouse, and some people even have a secret part of themselves that they try to conceal from the world at large. So these masks represent the disguises we often wear (metaphorically speaking) in our lives, often to succeed and get ahead. They may have value on a material level of being, but it’s important to consider sometimes if perhaps we have become lost in any of them. Have we forgotten that a mask is not who we really are? And can we live an authentic life while wearing that mask? We also may ask ourselves, “What masks am I wearing in order to succeed, and is worldly victory worth having to disguise my spiritual identity?” The answers to these questions require an awareness that the obstacle to living authentically lies not in wearing a mask, but in letting it define and restrict us, for every mask is of the world and not of Spirit.
