The Tower — Spiritual Message of the Day

April 22, 2013

Tower card -- Tarot of the Masters

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” — Neale Donald Walsch

A tower can protect us or imprison us, and we often don’t know the difference. We shelter ourselves in sterilized circumstances—a secure but unfulfilling job, a safe but loveless relationship—that we hope will protect us, but instead it traps us. We don’t see it that way, of course, because we’ve become comfortable there. Our self-made cages may not be gilded, but they are, at least, sufficiently padded. And so we languish in them. We don’t understand why we feel so unsatisfied in our comfort zone, but we’re afraid to leave it and try something new. So sometimes what we need is a cosmic kick in the pants to get us out of it, which is what the shattering event indicated by this card can be. The crisis usually seems drastic and cruel at the time, but it may be the best (or only) way to get us to take the next step in life and begin the next leg of our spiritual journey.

Whenever we experience a sudden upheaval in our lives, it is beneficial to consider how, perhaps, we are being led to another level of awakening. Sometimes it may be that we were in an oppressive or restrictive situation that we needed to escape in order to again breathe freely the breath of life. The crisis may be the humbling impetus we need in order to break down the barriers that separate us from other people. Perhaps the reason is that the time had come to stretch and grow in new ways. Or maybe we had refused to let go of an old phase of life and move on to a higher calling.

Of course, in the midst of the crisis we may not be able to make such a dispassionate assessment, but it may be somewhat comforting at least to consider the possibility that there is a higher reason for it. And perhaps afterward, we can look to find the next step on our spiritual path. It will be there waiting just outside our comfort zone.

If you enjoy these words of spiritual advice from the cards, you will love my new Tarot book called The Soul’s Journey: Finding Spiritual Messages in the Tarot.

  1. I thoroughly enjoy your posts. I make a pt of reading and thinking about them every day. Quite often your ‘pithy messages’ really hit home. Certainly the Tower resonates, esp right now. Actually, most of the time. But right now especially. Thank you so much.

I’ve got my eye on the deck, praying you still have one when I can gift myself one. My funds beyond tight. All fine cos I’m working on projects which mean not only a lot to me, but many others.

The life of a creative adventurer: seems glamorous to so many. But living moment by moment requires focus, planning and often some sacrifice. However, working on my photos and true stories, which many want to see/read, is not a sacrifice. Except money! Not always … breaking out of the Tower to another level.

One of my strongest desires is to create some images based on Tarot and my photos. Not a deck. I don’t have that much time. But a few of the Major Arcana. I want to do that sooo much! I’ve so many ideas! You inspire me with your ‘pithy messages.’

Thank you again! Namaste and smiles.

    • Thank you for the kind words and heartfelt comments. I’m always happy to hear that my blog posts touch people’s lives. My blog is a labor of love, which is something it seems you can identify with. 😀
Best of luck to you in your artistic endeavors!
