The Star — Spiritual Message of the Day

The Star -- Tarot of the Masters

“Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

A star is a metaphor for the divine light that shines within each and every one of us. We are all stars, points of light shining in the darkness like beacons calling to one another.

Just as the glare of city lights can drown out the subtle light of the stars in the heavens, our worldly concerns can obscure the shining star within us. And just as clouds will mask the stars, our worldly cares will block our vision of the inner stars of other people. Our worldly eyes are this easily fooled or blinded, but the eyes of the soul are not. When we look at someone with the eyes of our soul, we can see the transcendent beauty of their essential being. But how can we do this?

We may find valuable advice in something Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” There are a couple of ways to interpret this. First, this may refer to those dark times when you are in trouble. At such times, if someone helps you, you may see the light of their inner star. In other words, the darkness of your plight allows you to see the star of their divine spirit.

A second way to interprets King’s statement is through an analogy of the chatter of our ego-minds being like the brightness of day. That mental chatter is typically so loud that it drowns out our perception of the subtle glimmer of the stars in other people. In fact, it also blinds us to the star within our own heart. Through meditative silence, however, we begin to quiet that chatter. This is like the setting of the sun, which brings the silent darkness against which the stars shine like diamonds in the night.

The value of both of these interpretations depends on our willingness to see that there is a divine star shining within everyone no matter how much the dross of their worldly concerns obscures it.
