Hopefully, the Star card

August 6, 2014

The Star -- Tarot of the MastersA wonderful meaning for the Star card is “Hope,” and I have come to realize just how essential that meaning is.

This card can indicate seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but more than that, hope may have been all that got us through the darkness of the prior two cards — the ordeal of the Devil card (which can, for example, represent the descent into Hell, i.e., the Underworld, in the Hero’s journey) and the upheaval of the Tower card. Also, as a quote I used once for a pithy meaning for the Star card says, “In the face of uncertainty, there’s nothing wrong with hope.” (Dr. Bernie Siegel).

Since hope is often what sustains us, I decided to share a wonderful article I recently found about all the benefits of this optimistic attitude. The article is called “Towards a Psychology of Hope,” and it can serve as food for thought in our quest to understand the Star card.

This article was particularly interesting in that it dispels the common misconception that hope is naive and mere foolishness. Instead, hope, as a belief in positive outcomes, is actually a powerful predictor of a person’s well-being. Some of the benefits of becoming a more hopeful person are that we become “more resilient, more trusting, more open, and more motivated.” We also become more grateful and thus more joyful as well. This article also says that hope “affects our immune systems and general health” and it “sustains our intimate bonds, gives life purpose and meaning, and determines our prospects for survival and [good] health.”

The article also reveals that hope is not something that we either have or we don’t; it is a skill that we can acquire. Then, once acquired, it becomes self-perpetuating because “hopeful people tend to be more resilient, more trusting, more open, and more motivated than those less hopeful, so they are likely to receive more from the world, which in turn makes them more hopeful.”

There’s a lot more depth of content in this article, but I don’t want to just repeat all that’s there, so I recommend that you read it yourself. In any case, though, I think this all says that when the Star card comes up, it can give you the excellent advice to be more hopeful, because you can become a more hopeful person, and your level of hope is vitally important to your well-being in so many ways.
