Pithy Tarot meanings — Ten of Wands

January 13, 2015

Ten of Wands -- Tarot of the MastersOppression done to one may be done to us all.

This pithy meaning for the Ten of Wands advocates a universal view of oppression — When one group is oppressed, we should not just say, “Oh, that’s just happening to them, not to me. I don’t have to worry about that.” Oppression of one is oppression of all. See, for example, the famous statement by Martin Niemöller that begins:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Note also this quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. —

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

But this is not just a political statement applicable to national issues. It can be personal too. For example, any time we witness bullying but do nothing about it, we are in essence saying that it’s okay to bully anyone, even the people we love and even ourselves. Is that a statement we want to make? And worse yet is when we justify our own bullying or oppressing of someone or some group because we don’t like them or we think they are lesser people than we are. Do we realize the larger implications of that oppression?
