Bondage in the Tarot

February 3, 2015

“The moment we want to be something, we are no longer free.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti

The quote above is an abbreviation of the following quote:

“We all want to be famous people, and the moment we want to be something, we are no longer free.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti

There are several cards that this quote might work with, cards that can indicate a loss of freedom:

Demons, Eight of Swords, and Nine of Wands -- Tarot of the Masters

The Devil – This card is often seen in terms of addictions and how they put us in chains, but Krishnamurti says that just wanting to be something (anything other than what we are) creates chains that bind us.

Eight of Swords – In a prior blog post about the Eight of Swords, I talked about how this card can indicate our prison of discontent, which is created by all the things we think we need in or order to be happy. That can include all the things we think we need to be also.

Nine of Wands – The Nine of Wands can indicate the battles that we have fought, the scars we have acquired as a result, and the walls we build to protect ourselves from future battles. And so, it’s often about what we don’t want to be – we don’t want to be sad or hurt, and we don’t want to be a victim anymore. These are, of course, very understandable desires! But (as noted in a prior pithy meaning for this card) they come at the price of the walls we erect to create this new self.

Which of these cards would you associate with this quote? Or is there another one that works better for you?
