What does the Tower card mean?

August 13, 2015

Marseille Tarot - Maison Dieu (Tower)Here are two pithy meanings for the the Tower card:

One of the lesser-known aspects of the Tower card is anger and rage.  This led me to the following pithy meaning for it:

If you blow your top, you’ll blow your chances.

That aspect of controlling your anger is something I’ve explored in a couple other pithy meanings for this card. (See, for example, this one.)  But there’s a flip side to that.  Here is another way to interpret this card in other circumstances:

If you keep suppressing your anger, it’ll eventually blow up inside you … somehow.

That one is a very succinct summary of a book I’m reading right now called The Divided Mind: The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders.  (It’s a lot more complex than that, of course, so I recommend you read that book.)

Now, it seems like those two pithy meanings are in conflict, so how do we resolve that discrepancy? First, we have to realize that they are both talking about the same thing: repressed anger. Of course, every card has a spectrum of meanings.  In this case, sometimes one way of dealing with anger is appropriate, i.e., repressing its expression, and we have to do that in certain circumstances.  (For example, when dealing with our boss at work.)  On the other hand, continually repressing anger bottles it up and fills an unconscious reservoir of rage.  Inevitably, that reservoir will spill over into our lives in some very painful ways. So the resolution to the indicated difference between the two pithy meanings stated above is that we have to find ways to recognize and understand our anger, and then deal with it in ways that are not detrimental in particular situations. Don’t express it in inappropriate situations, but don’t keep bottling it up either.  Perhaps that’s why the Temperance card comes before this one in the Tarot deck: we have to learn that balancing act in order to properly deal with our anger.
