What does the Hermit card mean?

Hermit -- Tarot of the MastersToday I bring you a discussion of a pithy meaning for the Hermit card. However, by extension, it is a discussion of the meaning of the Hierophant card as well. Both of these cards are seen as indications of spiritual pursuit, so we may wonder what is the difference between the two?

While the Hierophant represents the orthodox path to spiritual attainment, the Hermit urges us to take the unconventional path to enlightenment. The Hierophant tells us to listen to the traditional teaching of a church, but the Hermit says listen to your heart and soul. Many of the pithy meanings I have provided for the Hermit emphasize his advice. Here is one more:

Any activity done with love and presence is a spiritual practice.
