What does the Two of Pentacles mean?

October 7, 2015

Two of Coins (Pentacles) -- Tarot of the MastersHere is a pithy meaning for the Two of Pentacles:
A small change can make a big difference.

There is something called the “Butterfly effect” which says that in any complex system, a small change in any initial conditions can result in large differences in a later state of that system. As a metaphorical example, the flapping of the wings of a butterfly can result in a perturbation in distant weather conditions.

Here are just a couple of consequences of this meaning for this card:

The changes you make in the world may seem minor, but don’t discount the possibility that they will have far reaching consequences. This is an encouragement from this card to do what you think is right.

Don’t expect two people to turn out the same just because they had similar conditions in their past.  Any minor differences can result in large differences in how they develop. I see this as an admonition against judging people with sentiments such as this: “I had that happen to me too, but I didn’t develop the same problem you have.”

  1. That was a beautiful interpretation of the Two of Disks that I hadn’t ever thought of. Thank you.

  2. Thanks! I often struggle with the reality that my energy in life seems to be that I have an influence but do not get feedback very often and when I do it’s often years down the road. I have grappled with wanting to know if I’m doing the right thing, heading down the right path. The past several years has been a time of growing in many ways but one of them in resting in the knowledge that keeping my intentions and my energy positive, that when I act from there, I do have an effect for good in people’s lives and I need to not worry about the feedback. Your thoughts today are a helpful encouragement along those lines.

    • Thank you for your feedback on this pithy meaning.
Yes, I agree that when we act from a place of positive intention and energy, we create positive effects in the world whether we see them or not. As I said once in a post about the Ace of Coins:
“Another lesson, one that delves deeper into our spiritual life, is that it’s always important to do the right thing, but then it’s also important to release our attachment to the results of that “right action” and allow the Divine to work through our efforts as appropriate.”
