What does the Ace of Swords mean?

November 6, 2015

Ace of Swords -- Tarot of the MastersHere is a pithy meaning for the Ace of Swords:
“What each of us believes in is up to us, but life is impossible without believing in something.” ― Kentetsu Takamori

Thinking about what this quote means can take us on an interesting journey.  One thought is that everyone believes something. Even if you say you don’t believe some particular thing, that means you do believe something else. And an essential part of the meaning of this quote is this: what we believe creates our lives. (Similarly, see my blog post from a few years ago where I talk about how this card tells us that we manifest what we focus our attention on: http://wp.me/pRTkX-qK)

But believing something and believing in something are different things. It’s a subtle semantic difference, but it’s important.  This consideration led me to see what I think is the essential part of this quote, which is an even pithier statement that we might extract from the above quote:

“Life is impossible without believing in something.”

Of course, technically, that’s not true.  You can be kept alive in a coma wherein you’re not thinking anything at all, but that’s not what Takamori is talking about. What I believe he is saying is that life is only worth living when you truly believe in something—something greater than yourself—and you live your life in accordance with that belief.
