2016 – the year of the Hermit

January 1, 2016

Hermit -- Tarot of the Masters2016 reduces numerologically to the number 9. This means that this is the year of the Hermit, so here are some sample pithy meanings for this card to think about:

Time heals all wounds.  (This one comes from an old traditional interpretation of the Hermit as “Father Time” and thus as a symbol of the inevitable passage of time.)

How can we ever find meaning in the world if we haven’t found it within ourselves first?

“If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path.” — Buddha

“The ways in which people arrive at spiritual understanding [take a wide] variety of paths.” — Ram Dass

“Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.” — Max Ehrman (Desiderata)

“Detachment from worldly things does not mean that you should own nothing, but that nothing should own you.” — Ali ibn abi Talib

Simplicity does not mean going without; it means going within.

Loneliness is just an illusion.

One man’s solitude is another man’s loneliness… and vice versa.

You need to go it alone this time.

“When the pupil is ready, the Master will appear.” — Theosophical saying

Wisdom is typically found in the humblest of circumstances.

There are various meanings for the coming year that one might infer from all this.  Will this be a healing year for you? Will it be the year you find a spiritual teacher … or maybe the year you become a spiritual teacher?  Is this an indication that it is time for you to pare down your material attachments? Should you go on a spiritual retreat this year? Etc.

Think about it.  What do you think this year of the Hermit will mean for you?
