What does the Six of Cups mean?

March 9, 2016

Six of Cups -- Tarot of the MastersHere is a pithy meaning for the Six of Cups:
Things in the past often look much better to someone who has a nostalgic attachment to them.

This is what I call the nostalgia effect. As an example, this is why the music of the 60s and 70s seems so great to Baby Boomers, but Millennials typically don’t agree.  In fact, it’s why I often see comments from Boomers on 60s and 70s music videos on YouTube that read something like this: “The music back then was so much better than the terrible music of today.” (Sturgeon’s Law is another explanation for this, but that’s another pithy Tarot post.)

I know this is a somewhat trivial example, but the point is that the nostalgia effect—exalting things of the past—sometimes blinds us to appreciation of what’s good in life now. And that is an important point.
