The Seven of Wands suggests a way to live a happier life

wands-07-10pctThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of doing a traditional reading. Here’s a way to create a happier life using a bit of advice from the Seven of Wands. Let’s start with this pithy meaning for this card:

Try not to be so defensive; there’s always value to be found in criticism.

This sentiment is also reflected in the following passage about this card from my book, The Soul’s Journey:

A vital piece of advice [when receiving criticism] is to assume innocence.  It’s all too easy to mistake constructive criticism for an attack when we are dead set on defending our ego (as we usually are).  But even if a comment does bear a reasonable appearance of an attack, there is usually at least a kernel of truth in it, and we can benefit from finding whatever advice there may be in it.

These thoughts about meanings for the Seven of Wands suggest the following advice for what you can do today to bring a bit more happiness into your life:

Recall a bit of criticism you endured recently … and the more it offended you, the better for our purposes here. Now consider that it might not have been meant hurtfully—not totally, at least.  Take a moment to bring that realization into your heart. Perhaps say to yourself, “I know that this criticism was meant to help me.” That’s the soothing part of this advice.

Next, think about what truth there may be in that criticism and how you might use it to make yourself a better person or improve your health, material well-being, or relationships.  Of course, there may be part of it that’s not true, but certainly there’s some kernel of truth to it, and discovering and using that truth can make your life better … and happier.
