The Nine of Wands suggests a way to live a happier life

May 2, 2017

Nine of Wands -- Tarot of the MastersThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of doing a traditional reading. Here’s a way to create a happier life today using a bit of advice from the Nine of Wands.

To me, this card often indicates barriers of some sort. Perhaps the most insidious sort of barriers are the emotional ones that we build to protect ourselves but that end up isolating us and thus becoming more a prison than the fortress we hoped they would be. In light of that, here are a few pithy meanings for this card:

  • Are you reasonably protecting yourself or are you erecting barriers that are keeping out life?
  • Sometimes we erect barricades around our lives to keep the pain out when really those barricades are holding in the pain that’s already deep inside us.
  • “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” — Rumi

Based on these thoughts about the Nine of Wands here is a suggestion for what you can do today to bring a bit more happiness into your life:

Think about what psychological barricades you have created to protect yourself. Perhaps one comes to mind that is specifically designed to keep someone in particular at bay. Maybe there is something you do (or don’t do) in order to protect yourself which is based on an old wound. Or do you avoid commitments in order to avoid being hurt? Whatever comes to mind, think about it. Is it keeping you from enjoying life or moving forward with your life? Of course it’s reasonable to protect yourself sometimes, but is this barricade imprisoning you more than it’s protecting you? It’s up to you to decide, but at least consider it, and think about how you might at least cut open a doorway in it if you can’t tear it down right away.
