The Four of Cups suggests a way to live a happier life

June 8, 2017

Four of Cups from Tarot of the MastersThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of doing a traditional reading. Here’s a way to create a happier life today using a bit of advice from the Four of Cups.

A few years ago I shared the following pithy meaning for this card:

A busy person is rarely depressed; an idle person is rarely happy.

I realize that sometimes we are quite happy during rest and recuperation, but that’s not really what I mean by being idle. Also, I know that sometimes we don’t feel all that happy while we are busy working, but productive activity can give us a sense of worth and accomplishment.

How you feel about being busy is an important factor here. If you aren’t finding joy in what you are busy doing, maybe there’s something about it that you’re missing. Perhaps it would help to consider how it can bring you happiness and fulfillment, and maybe it would help if you try to see it as a way to do that.

With all this in mind, here is a suggestion for a way to make your life happier and more fulfilling:

If you are busy but not all that happy about it, think about how your activity can lift your spirits. What is productive and fulfilling about it? How can you take pride in what you’re doing?

If you are idle and discontented, think about what you can do to occupy your time productively. Find something worthwhile to do. As an example of something you can do, here is what a friend on Facebook once said:
“Every day I look at a few posts from other people, and I try to find something encouraging to say to them about what’s going on in their life.”
I know that doesn’t seem like a big thing, but this friend said that she’s gotten feedback from some friends that sometimes it really makes a difference in their day.

PS: In support of all this, but with a somewhat different perspective, here is a quote that I have used as a pithy meaning for the Four of Cups:

“Boredom is your ‘fuller life’ calling you, and your fear of hearing the call.”
— this quote is from
The Heart of the Soul: Emotional Awareness by Gary Zukav and Linda Francis.
