The Three of Swords suggests a way to live a happier life

August 22, 2017

Alchemical Tarot -- Three SwordsThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of doing a traditional reading. Here’s a way to create a happier life today using a bit of advice from the Three of Swords.

Let’s start with a quote that I associate with this card:

“Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” — Traditional saying (which may be more encouragement than prediction)

I once saw a wonderful amateur performance of Christina Aguilera’s Song “Beautiful” where a group of people joined the singer on stage.  Each person held up a sign with an insulting word (such as “ugly” or “stupid” or “nerd”).  Then, at the end of the song, they all flipped over their signs to display the word “beautiful” written on the back.  It was quite moving, and it made me think about the insults we’ve accumulated in our hearts.  I realized that all of us carry around the hurtful words or accusations that have been thrown at us through the years—from our childhood up to today—and from time to time we relive hearing them.  Then I thought of a wonderful way to deal with that and to heal such wounds. Here it is:

Today, make a commitment that whenever such thoughts come into your head—whenever you imagine someone telling you that you are not good enough, or not smart enough, etcetera—whenever that happens, imagine that person saying instead “You’re beautiful.”  (You can substitute whatever compliment you prefer there.)  Then that wounding will start to become fertile soil for the growth and blossoming of your psyche.

First PS: It might help to listen to Christina Aguilera’s Song “Beautiful”.  (The link here will take you to the song on YouTube.)

Second PS: For another perspective on this traditional sticks and stones saying and how it relates to this card, read my Tarot Spirituality post about it from a couple of years ago.
