The Six of Swords suggests a way to live a happier life

Six of Swords -- Tarot of the MastersThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of traditional readings. Here’s a way to create a happier life today using a bit of advice from the Six of Swords.

With its depiction of a somber voyage to a new and better land, this card can suggest gaining a new outlook on life in our quest for happiness and meaning.  We usually think this will come from a change in our circumstances, such as a new job, relationship, or location—and sometimes it may—but a change in our attitude and perspective is what’s most effective because, as the saying goes, “happiness is an inside job.” There are a lot of quotes that support this point and provide varying perspectives on it. Here are a few of them:

  • “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust
  • “It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.” — Dale Carnegie
  • “By thinking upon a condition, we tend to animate it with the life of our thought, and thereby it is perpetuated and magnified.” — Ernest Holmes (from his book, The Science of Mind)
  • “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” — Max Planck
  • And finally, here are a couple of quotes from Viktor Frankl’s book, Man’s Search for Meaning
    “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.”
    “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

Our search for happiness entails things like learning to see the proverbial glass as half full instead of half empty or looking for the good in situations or other people instead of the bad.  This choice of perspective is always ours to make, and as we arrive at this new consciousness, we will find that it is vital to improving our lives and bringing positive change to the world.

Based on all this, here is an exercise you might do to bring more happiness into your life.
Consider for a moment: What circumstance do you think needs to change in order for you to be happy?  Now think about how you can change your views and attitude about it. This is how you can become happier about your situation right now.

PS: Note that I’m not saying you shouldn’t try to change your circumstances. I’m saying that for now, see if you can change your perspective of it.
