What does the Justice card mean?

April 28, 2018

Justice -- Tarot of the MastersHere is a pithy meaning for the Justice card:
Justice isn’t blind. It’s supposed to be, but it’s not.

While cosmic justice (karma) is all-seeing, human justice is supposed to be “blind,” i.e., impartial. (Hence the blindfold on depictions of Lady Justice at courthouses.) Unfortunately, human imperfection being what it is, that ideal is only attained to varying degrees—sometimes wildly missing the mark. As noted in an article titled “Spotlight on Restorative Justice” –

… when we realize that [criminal] convictions disproportionately affect people of color and the poor, we confront a … complicated truth: Justice isn’t blind.

This article also asserts that our “culture of punishment run amuck is destroying the fabric of society.” As a way to change that, it explains how we can move away from a dysfunctional system of punitive justice and toward one of restorative justice. Finally, it is important to note that this is not only applicable to our courts of law; it is also relevant to the way we deal with one another.
