The Knight of Swords suggests a way to live a happier life

June 9, 2018

Knight of Swords -- Tarot of the MastersThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of traditional readings. Here’s a way to create a happier, more fulfilled life today using messages and advice from the Knight of Swords.

We may interpret this card as actions (which Knights represent) inspired by our beliefs (Swords).  A similar interpretation comes from a pithy meaning for the Knight of Swords that I posted several years ago: Doing is believing!  As I noted at that time, it is through acting upon our beliefs that we “prove” them to ourselves and (more importantly) that we make those beliefs real and concrete in our lives.  In short, it is when we act upon our beliefs that they become manifest. Consequently, this card warns us of living too much in our heads. It says that we must engage in life, not just think about it or study it.

These considerations remind me of the following quote:

Do more than belong: participate.  Do more than care: help.  Do more than believe: practice.”William Arthur Ward

In short, walk the talk. Practice what you preach. For example, we learn charity through acts of generosity, we learn about love by acting compassionately, and we learn to live in the present moment by practicing mindfulness in all that we do.

Here, then, is an exercise to bring you a more fulfilled life:

Is there something you have been studying or thinking about that you want to really know? Or is there some change you’ve been saying our society needs? This card suggests that today, you should set aside your studies of it or your preaching about it and instead, practice it. For example, have you thought about how humanity needs to be more charitable?  Go out and find someone in need and give them something or do something that will help them. (That shouldn’t be hard to do. In most of our cities, it is not hard to find a homeless person in need.) Or have you been learning about how mankind is polluting our world? Perhaps you can go to a park and clean up some of the trash there. Whatever it is that you decide to do, it will make you feel better to get some experience in what you’ve been trying to learn or to be part of the solution for a problem you’ve been complaining about.
