What does the Eight of Pentacles mean?

July 24, 2018

RWS 2.0 Pentacles 08Here is a pithy meaning for the Eight of Pentacles:
Are you too busy to live a meaningful life?

Socrates is purported to have said, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” so what happens when you’re too busy to stop now and then and take time to examine your life? Are you no longer a human being, and now just a human doing? In your busy-ness have you lost the ability to live and enjoy a meaningful life? When this card comes up, it may suggest that we consider these are issues. Or it might say that you are much too busy, and there are dire consequences of that.

In such a consideration, I considered the Eight of Pentacle’s contra-positive card, which is the Three of Swords. When you put these two cards together, you get this warning: “Excessive busy-ness is heart-killing.” (This may be taken figuratively or literally).

Finally, we might associate the following quote with this card. It is something I read once in an article titled “The Disease of Being Busy

How did we create a world in which we have more and more and more to do with less time for leisure, less time for reflection, less time for community, less time to just… be?
