What does the High Priestess mean?

October 31, 2018

RWS 2.0 High PriestessHere is a pithy meaning for the High Priestess:
“Love the mystery.”

A century ago, Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke gave us this advice, and the following is a much less pithy expression of this sentiment taken from an article titled “The Wisdom of Rilke: Love Your Solitude, Love Your Unresolved Questions” —

Each of us remains a mystery to everyone we encounter, and perhaps even to ourselves. … If we become obsessed with needing a rational answer for everything, we will surely torture ourselves. [So] Rilke encourages us to love the questions, to love the mystery, to accept that a life of incomplete knowledge has been the fate of every person since the dawn of self-awareness. … We should live the mystery, because we are meant to live, to experience, not to understand everything.
