The Three of Pentacles suggests a way to live a happier life

May 7, 2019

RWS 2.0 Three of PentaclesThere are many ways to use Tarot cards beyond the well-known process of traditional readings. Here is a way to create a happier, more fulfilled life today using messages and advice from the Three of Pentacles.

This card says that there is a very fulfilling aspect to ordinary labor when we express our creativity in what we do. We all have great creative potential (whether we are aware of it or not), and it is very satisfying to manifest that potential.

In the RWS version of the Three of Pentacles, we see three people performing varying roles as they work together to build a cathedral.  We might infer from this that we have to create something majestic in order to be fulfilled, but that’s not the case. It is not the grandeur of what we do that defines us.  We need not build a castle, discover a cure for cancer, or compose a symphony in order for our lives to have value.  Rather, it is the sincerity of our efforts, the care we take in them, and the spirit we put into them that creates worth and greatness in anything we do.

Our sense of purpose and fulfillment can be discovered and expressed through even the simplest labor; it is all in how we view it and approach it.  This message can be seen in the following story about three brick masons, which is attributed to a writer named Margaret M. Stevens:

When the first man was asked what he was building, he answered gruffly, “I’m laying bricks.” The second man said simply, “I’m building a wall.” But the third man replied enthusiastically and with obvious pride, “I’m building a cathedral.”

So a question to keep in mind is this: Which person are you?  Are you merely laying bricks or are you building a cathedral?

Inspired by this message from the Three of Pentacles, here is a suggestion for a way to bring more happiness and abundance into your life:

Consider the work you do and write a paragraph about how it is part of something wonderful. Alternatively, write about how it expresses your creativity or perhaps about how you could make it more soulful.  Note that this work can be anything from your career to volunteer work that you do to a hobby you enjoy. Then, commit to seeing your work in this deeper, more fulfilling context every day from now on.
