New Tarot de Marseilles — Update

April 13, 2021

As I mentioned in a recent post here, I am working on a new “21st Century Tarot de Marseilles” deck. At that time, I’d only completed the Fool card in order to get some feedback on the whole idea. The response was positive, so I have continued work on this new deck, and I thought I would share with you all my new versions of more of the Major Arcana cards — cards I to VI

As I noted previously, I have tried to remain pretty faithful to the original line drawings and color scheme of the TdM. The main change is that I have endeavored to make the images look sharper and with coloring that pops, much as I did for the RWS deck with my “RWS 2.0

    love them. love their vivacity, their ‘solidness’

    • Thank you! I’m slowing making progress, so keep an eye on my blog for updates with more images from this developing deck

    only thing is…if you are going to use the ‘u’ as a ‘u’ in L’empereur..then you should use it in Les ameureux;

    • You make an interesting point, Pauline. Here’s the thing though: the reference that I used for the Marseilles deck can be found here:
      As you can see there, a V was used for U for two Majors (and only two) – Amovrevx and La Maison Diev
      I was of two minds when I worked on these cards: Make all the U’s U or make them all V, OR conform to this historical deck and use V only for those two cards. I chose the latter option. However, I’m still open to suggestion and plan to ask around.
      Which of those three options do you prefer and why?

    in the middle ages ,, literacy was very restricted and I think maybe the original cards were printed and set out by people who wouldn’t have really known the difference between a ‘U’ or a ‘V’ , or maybe the day they were setting out the text they didn’t have enough stamps for a ‘U’ ….nowadays we don’t have that problem … and I would use the ‘U’ where it is correct to do so…if for nothing else than for cohesiveness,, it jars on my eyes,,, but of course they are your cards…lol

    • I’ve been asking around on FB groups and have gotten a mixture of opinions. However, someone on one FB group noted that the mixture of U’s and V’s on the TdM cards was an historical anomaly (there was a time when their use was interchangeable) and probably did not indicate any intentional “message”. I’m still thinking about it, and I’m hoping for some other responses, but I’m slightly leaning toward making them all U now. Time will tell.
