What does the Devil card mean?

August 24, 2021

Here is a pithy meaning for the Devil card:
Need, expectation, and jealousy all condemn our relationships to Hell.

As an expansion on this pithy meaning, here is what these three toxic elements are:
Need: This refers to needing the other person to be who you want them to be, to do what you want them to do, and to treat you the way you want them to treat you.
Expectation: This is similar. It means placing expectations on the relationship and on the other person.
Jealousy: This one seems obvious, but in addition to being about your fear that the other person will fall in love with someone else, it also means being jealous about anything that competes with you for the other person’s attention. For example: their work, a hobby, or their non-romantic love for a pet, a friend, or a parent.

This pithy meaning was inspired by material in Chapter 8 of Neal Donald Walsch’s Friendship with God.
