Temperance — Spiritual Message of the Day

February 1, 2011

Some people think that moderation is a hindrance, inconvenience, or a burden, but it’s not. It’s a way of finding our spiritual center while traveling along a physical journey.

Just as we can’t create anything of value with too much of one ingredient or too little of another, we need to find a compromise or balance between the two extremes of indulging our passions versus totally abstaining from them. We cannot learn from our physical incarnation if we avoid all enjoyment of the sensual world, while on the other hand, our desires must be adequately restrained and appropriately channeled so that they neither impair our well-being and spiritual pursuits nor infringe upon the rights and happiness of others.

If you enjoy these words of spiritual advice from the cards, you will love my book, The Soul’s Journey: Finding Spiritual Messages in the Tarot.

  1. absolutely. What do you think about Temperance also representing a guide to accompany a “descent into the underworld”, sort of like a Virgil-type character?
    loving your blog, James 🙂

    • Thanks for the love, Laura. 😀
The cards all have a wide spectrum of meanings, of course. I’m just trying to present a snipet of meaning for each of these posts.
But, yeah, the position of this card sequentially between Death and Hell (Devil) certainly implies that it has an aspect of a psychopomp.

My virtual tarot group began a meditation on Temperance. When I approached her I recognized my mother’s eyes. Her message to me was that she ‘followed’ me to keep me in balance. Shr has been gone 40 some years
